ADHD & the ‘funk’: why body-mind balance matters (and why it’s hard)

If you live with ADHD, you’ll likely know the funk I’m talking about…

That sense of being totally out of sync—mentally overstimulated but physically flatlined. ️ Maybe you’ve been hyperfocused for hours on something mentally gripping, but realise you haven’t eaten, moved, or even had a glass of water. Your brain is buzzing… but your body? Neglected.

And when the body is undernourished, under-moved, and under-cared for—our emotional regulation can quickly unravel. Anxiety ramps up. Everything feels off.

So what helps?

In my work with ADHD clients, one of the most helpful shifts we make is building in gentle structure—nudges that support:

• Regular movement (even just a walk or stretch)

• Consistent food and hydration

• Moments of reconnection with the body

When we care for the body, the mind often follows. We don’t chase perfection. ADHD wiring means balance will never look like a straight line. But a move towards ‘good enough’—where the body and mind are in more of an alliance—is a powerful step.

ADHD brains seek stimulation. And they also deserve rest, rhythm, and fuel.

If you relate, you’re not alone. Managing ADHD is an ongoing process, not a fixed state. But you can find systems that help you manage more kindly.

Balance isn’t the goal. Managing with compassion is.
